Shira has a Bachelor's degree in English from Oberlin College and a Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Hunter College, City University of New York. She has taught English as a Second Language in the English Department at Baruch College, at the International English Language Institute at Hunter College, where she also served as Academic Coordinator and at the Institute of American Language and Culture at Fordham University. In 2008, Shira co-founded a private adult ESL school in New York where she served as Director for 10 years. She now works as a Clinical Supervisor, mentoring future ESL teachers in their Master's Programs, at the Hunter College School of Education, and as a private tutor for adults who want to improve their written and spoken English.  

Shira has taught academic English, with a concentration in reading, writing, grammar and editing skills, to college students and to students planning to continue their higher education in the U.S. over the course of more than 30 years. She has also taught Business English and General Conversational English at all levels of proficiency in New York. She specializes in helping students who are trying to improve their academic English skills, particularly in writing and reading comprehension, in order to continue to pursue both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the United States as well as business people who want to feel more comfortable living and working in an English-speaking environment. She is an expert at helping students to understand both the written and spoken errors that they still struggle with, and to learn how to recognize and correct those errors in their own speaking and writing. Shira has worked with students from beginning to advanced levels and has helped students pursue admissions to a wide range of colleges, graduate programs, law schools and post-doctoral programs in addition to continuing to support them in improving their English during their studies. 

Shira currently provides General ESL tutoring, Academic English tutoring, and Business English tutoring via Zoom and in person in Manhattan. 

Shira offers one-on-one remote lessons via Zoom or in person to students at all levels of proficiency. Lessons can be scheduled for either 1, 1.5 or 2 hours at a time.
